The goal of automating font generation was to achieve a smooth transition between heading designs that are more delicate and thin in appearance and substantial, hefty designs for caption-size tiny type. Using advanced interpolation or multiple master technology, Minion was expanded into a vast family in order to provide a variety of weights and optical sizes appropriate for various text sizes. This was done to establish a reasonable balance between the size of the letters in relation to the ascenders and descenders. The design, according to Slimbach, “has a basic structure and reasonable proportions.” Although Slimbach claims that this was done more for aesthetic purposes than for commercial ones, the design is slightly condensed. Minion was developed for body text in a traditional style, as its historically inspired name suggests, but significantly condensed and with big apertures to improve legibility.
